Typhoid fever
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. Unlike many short-lived stomach infections, it can cause a prolonged illness throughout the body and serious complications. Paratyphoid fever is a similar illness caused by related bacteria. People may continue to carry and pass on the bacteria after they appear to have recovered.
Prevention: Mixed
Symptoms
- A fever that gradually increases and persists
- Headache, tiredness, and loss of appetite
- Stomach pain with diarrhea or constipation
- Occasionally a faint rash on the torso
Transmission
- Eating food or drinking water contaminated by stool from an infected person or a carrier
Prevention
Use safe drinking water, choose food prepared safely, and wash hands before eating. Vaccination can reduce typhoid risk but does not replace food and water precautions. Review destination-specific protection before travel.
Traveler risk
Risk is higher where safe water and sanitation are limited, including parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Diagnosis and care
Typhoid needs medical assessment and antibiotics. Resistance can affect which medicine works, so mention your travel history. Seek prompt care for a persistent fever during or after travel.
